Weight Gain and Thyroid

by Mimi

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism three years ago and had my thyroid chemicially removed (no surgery) with iodine treatment. I have gained 15 kg (33 lb) in three years and although I am on a very low calorie vegetarian diet (up to 100 calories/day) I am unable to take off any weight. What can I do?

Hi Mimi,

My heart goes out to you -- I'm sorry you have this condition. I hear similar stories almost everyday. Your's is a medical condition and I'm not a doctor, so my best advice is to ask your doctor if a daily walking regime would be acceptable.

For instance, if you weigh 175 pounds and you walk briskly 30 minutes a day, five days per week you would lose 14 pounds in a year's time. Again, speak to your physician as each individual's situation is different.

May I suggest you and your doctor visit the Best Exercises section of this site and develop a complete physical activity program that would meet your needs.

I'll be thinking of you so keep me posted. Please believe me when I tell you -- I've seen small increases in physical activity and daily sunlight work weight loss miracles. You just have to be patient, consistent and walk frequently. Your doctor will know what's best for you.
