Twinkies, 500 million baked every year. Photo/B.Yarnell500 million Twinkies are baked every year, so we must be eating a lot of them.

How grown adults can eat these is beyond me. Don't worry, I'm not getting on my soap-box, I just don't know why it takes 29 ingredients to make a little bitty "cream" filled sponge cake. But if this is your snack cake of choice, let's see what portion reduction can do.

REGULAR PORTION SIZES
1 Twinkie = 150 calories

25% PORTION REDUCTION
3/4 of a Twinkie = 113 calories

CALORIES SAVED = 37

Make this portion reduction everyday for a year and lose 3.8 pounds. Add this to other portion reductions in your diet and the pounds lost begin to become substantial.

Why not try this -- eliminate your daily Twinkie altogether. Just say good-bye. No other changes, diet or exercise. Just one less snack cake a day. Do this everyday for a year and lose 15 pounds.

BONUS TIP

An alternative you may want to consider is to simply upgrade the quality and enjoyment of your sweet 'fix.' For example, I have one Lammes Dark Chocolate Longhorn EVERYDAY. It has 120 calories, but satisfies my desire for chocolate and makes my tummy happy. Made with approximately 10 fresh quality ingredients I can pronounce, it's part of my healthy diet plan.

In this example, substitute the 150 calorie snack cake for a 120 calorie Longhorn and save 30 calories. Enough to lose three pounds in a year. Not bad.
