ANALYSIS: Facts About Obesity Survey
STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT…
Obesity in the United States Statistics
Personal Data Category

Obesity in the United States statistics are rising faster than the national debt for sure. But who are these people? This group of questions concerns the "psychographic" and "demographic" make-up of overweight and obese folks.

Psychographics describe how a person feels about something. It is psychological, emotional and based on past experiences and other factors. For instance some causes of obesity have distinct psychographic origins.

Compare that to demographics, which is fact based. Are you male or female? Age and marital status. Psychographics reveal how you feel. Demographics define who you are. I asked demographic questions to find out who my survey participants were. The exact percentages. Many more of these types of questions were asked on the other side of the survey which was an application or registration form.

Questions 69-74 and 77 were demographic questions. Most are self-explanatory, but still worthy of comment.

69. Are your children overweight?
  • yes (48%)
  • no (23%)
  • no children (29%)

I honestly don't know how to evaluate this data or what to say about it. I have read as many as 80% of all overweight children have overweight parents.

Obesity in young children is too high. Way too high. I also know only the most courageous parents are willing to speak up on the subject. The finger of blame is often pointed right back at them. It's not about blame or fault, it's about a real world solution to a problem that left as is will result in the eventual health deterioration of an entire generation of young people. One in three are overweight. And the number is increasing.

People aren't overweight because they are out of control gluttons but because as a nation we are apathetic about our diet. For most of us, we just don't pay attention to what and how much we eat. And we certainly don't ask the big question, why do we overeat and make poor choices when we know we will suffer for it?

70. Is your spouse or partner overweight?
  • yes (39%)
  • no (22%)
  • no spouse/partner (39%)

Everyone of my survey participants were overweight. So I believe this data is right on the button. Being overweight can many times be in the eye of the beholder. Most 275 pound women do not think their 5'9", 225 pound husband is obese, but he is. Clinically and factually.

People have a wide and varied opinion about what overweight and obesity is. However, any way you cook the books with these facts, they all validate one another. 66% of the American population is overweight. If you are, odds are your children and spouse or partner are overweight as well.

Everyone of my clients voiced concerns about their bad habits being imitated by their children. I saw a lot of guilt and pain suffered by parents of overweight children. As bad as that is, there is nothing quite as devastating to a family as losing a parent. Especially for weight related causes, but it happens daily.

71. Is one or both of your parents overweight?
  • yes (63%)
  • no (36%)
  • don't know (1%)

I asked this from pure curiosity. I wanted to see if there was a generational relationship between our overweight children, our parents being overweight and of course the participants themselves. In question #69, 48% said their children were overweight. 39% admitted their spouse or partner was overweight in question #70. So it's really no revelation that 63% said they had overweight parents.

Let's face facts. Fat is a family affair. Body shape and hereditary factors may influence the ease or difficulty of weight loss. But there is nothing preventing you from setting a good example for your children. Encouraging physical activity and an active and socially involved lifestyle.

Generational weight problems are due to many factors including learned behavior, environment, biological and common social influences.

72. How overweight are you?
  • 10-25 lbs. (16%)
  • 26-50 lbs. (37%)
  • 51-75 lbs. (29%)
  • 76 or more (18%)

I could have predicted each choice within a couple of percentage points. 84% had more than 26 pounds to lose. Keep this in perspective though. A five foot woman who is 26 pounds overweight is far more overweight than a 5'9" woman with the same 26 extra pounds. The amount of weight you want to lose is not necessarily defined by how much you need to lose to come within the limits of a healthy weight. Ideal weight and healthy weight are different. Still it's your choice.

Obesity in the United States Statistics

The amount of weight needed to lose is in direct proportion to the degree of increased physical activity needed. For instance, 47% said they had 51 or more pounds to lose.

Thirty-one of those pounds could be lost within 12 months with a simple 45 minute daily walk. Reducing a 2,500 calorie diet by a mere 10% with portion reduction would produce a calorie savings of 250 calories per day or another 26 pounds for a grand total of 57 pounds in one year. Forty-five minute daily walk. Leave a bite of the burger, a swallow of the soda. Lose 57 pounds in 12 months. Fact! Now I ask you. Really. Is that too big a price to pay for living a naturally thin life? No diet required.

The reason America's fat is because we eat to much of the wrong food. Our choices are...

  1. Eat different food.
  2. Eat less of the food we like.

Number one has been used so much, it's like a piece of old duct tape that no longer sticks. Diets mean eating different foods and we know that doesn't work. The correct answer is portion reduction and it is painless. Not hype. That's exactly what successful weight losers overwhelmingly agree is the best healthy diet plan. Because it works. Let's say your diet is horrible. Fast food, soft drinks, grease, sugar and sodium nightmare. When you reduce sodium, fat and sugar intake by 10%, many people fall out of the obesity health disease danger zone. Reduce fat, sodium and sugar 10% when you leave 10% of your serving on the plate. See Portion Perversion for more information.

73. Are you male or female?
  • male (34%)
  • female (66%)

Absolutely no surprise here. Men don't get the heat women do for being overweight so they are less concerned. Society breaks much harder on overweight women than men.

At the beginning of my seminars I ask all the gentlemen to stand up. Then I say the following...

  1. If your excessive weight keeps you from doing anything you want to do, sit down.
  2. Sit down if you're embarrassed about your weight.
  3. Sit down if your weight interferes with your sex life.

None of these guys sit down. I'm not kidding. After this demonstration I ask them to sit down if they think they have more sex than the guy next to him. They all sit down in unison. Amazing. Men!

74. What's your age?
  • 16-24 (6%)
  • 25-36 (27%)
  • 37-54 (41%)
  • 55 and up (26%)

Again, more numbers I could have predicted. 67% is 37 or older. An amazing thing about being a weight loss coach is seeing just how much age can play in reaching and maintaining ideal weight. See 110 Quick Weight Loss Tips for the most productive weight loss ages for men and women.

Young people lose weight faster, older people keep it off longer. Helping a young person maintain weight is a much bigger challenge than helping a 42 year old woman live thin naturally. Young folks get distracted and think weight loss will always be as easy as it is now with that super sleek 24 year old metabolism. They're invincible and weight loss is a momentary concern like pimples or a tooth ache.

Old folks have the benefit of experience and reflection. You know -- been there, done that! Instant gratification is no longer more important than lasting success. Lasting weight loss odds go up as you age. Health is more than the absence of disease and you're NEVER TOO OLD TO PURSUE HEALTH.

Your mental state now will have a lot to do with your physical state when you age. Your mental state means you perceive yourself as a physically active person because you live a physically active life. Mental state means you don't worry about weight loss issues because you have no need. Your mental state reflects your life. And your life will be what your mental state creates. How you age is almost as much in your control as, let's say, how much you weigh.

77. Does being overweight and dieting affect your…
  • family (9%)
  • job (5%)
  • social life (7%)
  • all of the above (77%)
  • none of the above (2%)

98% admitted that being overweight and dieting affected FAMILY (9%), JOB (5%), SOCIAL LIFE (7%), ALL OF THE ABOVE (77%). An amazing 77% of participants agreed their personal weight problem was affecting every area of their life. Check other questions in this survey and it would be safe to assume the participants weight problem did not lead to a job promotion, gratifying social life or a more happy and rewarding family experience. On the contrary. Overweight people have told me heartbreaking tragedies caused directly by being overweight and the constant pressure resulting from chronic dieting. And it happened daily.

Being overweight hurts. And it hurts a lot of people. Instead of dieting, lose weight with a healthy diet plan you can use for life. One that allows you to consume your preferred foods and doesn't require lifestyle change, major diet change or intrude on your regular schedule.

Don't allow your weight condition to force you into isolation. Being overweight does not mean you're not a good father, mother, employee, employer or friend. So don't believe the stereotype. Speak up. Attend the party. Contribute and participate. But don't allow your weight loss effort or overweight condition to affect others. Don't expect others to make allowances or concessions because of your weight. Which is the #1 all time biggest reason why family, work and social life are affected by a persons diet or overweight condition! BECAUSE YOU INVOLVE THEM IN IT! Say less -- weight less. Keep it to yourself and avoid the outside influence obstacle completely.
